Daphne du Maurier always said her novel Rebecca was a study in jealousy – Telegraph

‘Very roughly, the book will be about the influence of a first wife on a second,” wrote Daphne du Maurier in her notes. “Until wife 2 is haunted day and night… a tragedy is looming very close and crash! Bang! Something happens.”

 

Seventy-five years ago this month, Rebecca was published, and readers flooded bookshops to discover the dark nature of that “something”. The novel was to be du Maurier’s masterpiece and a classic of 20th-century fiction that continues to enthral today.
